Can I Use My Foreign Eyeglass Prescription in Nepal?

Travellers, expats and digital nomads often arrive in Kathmandu with a spectacle prescription issued in another country. An overseas prescription can provide useful information, but the optical team must still confirm that it is readable, complete and suitable for the glasses you want to order.

What information should the prescription include?

A spectacle prescription normally identifies the right and left eye and may include sphere, cylinder, axis, prism, addition power and other notes. The format and abbreviations can vary by country. Progressive, bifocal and reading prescriptions may require extra measurements that are not written on the original document.

  • Your full name and prescription date
  • Separate values for the right and left eye
  • Sphere, cylinder and axis where applicable
  • Addition power for multifocal or reading lenses where applicable
  • Any prism or special lens instructions

Why pupillary distance still matters

Pupillary distance, often written as PD, helps position the optical centres of spectacle lenses. Some prescriptions do not include it because it is measured when glasses are ordered. Depending on the frame and lens design, additional fitting measurements may also be needed in person.

Should I have another eye examination?

A new eye examination may be recommended if the prescription is old, incomplete, difficult to read, or no longer feels comfortable. It is also sensible when you have noticed blurred vision, headaches, eye strain or another change. An eye examination is not a substitute for urgent medical care when symptoms are sudden or severe.

Seek prompt clinical assessment for sudden vision loss, severe eye pain, chemical exposure, significant eye injury, flashes with a sudden increase in floaters, or other rapidly changing symptoms.

Is a contact-lens prescription the same?

No. A spectacle prescription does not by itself provide all the information required for contact lenses. Contact lenses sit on the eye and require appropriate fitting, lens parameters and eye-health assessment. Bring the packaging or details of your current contact lenses if available, and see our contact lens fitting guide.

What should I send on WhatsApp?

  • A clear photograph or PDF of the complete prescription
  • Photos of your present glasses, including frame markings
  • Your preferred frame or lens type
  • Your hotel or neighbourhood in Kathmandu
  • Your departure date and realistic collection window

Can replacement glasses be made quickly?

Timing depends on the prescription, lens design, coatings, measurements, frame choice and stock availability. Selected prescriptions may be completed quickly, but no timeframe should be assumed until the optical team has reviewed the requirements. Sending your documents before visiting can help the team give you realistic guidance.

Frequently asked questions

Can I send a handwritten prescription?
Yes, if every value is clear and complete. The team may request clarification or recommend a new examination when information is uncertain.

Can I use a prescription from the UK, US, Europe or Australia?
The format can often be interpreted, but it must be reviewed for completeness and suitability. Measurement conventions and terminology can differ.

Can another person collect my glasses?
Ask the branch before arranging collection. Some orders require in-person fitting or final checks.

What if I have lost the prescription?
Book an eye examination rather than guessing the power from memory.
